Raw denim jeans, are made from denim that hasn’t gone through a pre-wash process. This is to reduce shrinkage and give softness. Raw denim can be sanforized or unsanforized. Sanforized denim, has undergone a treatment that prevents shrinkage. Unsanforized denim will shrink between 5–10%.

Selvedge (or ‘self edge’) denim is crafted using a traditional shuttle loom, where large strips of fabric are produced with tightly woven bands on either side that prevent fraying and ravelling. A signifier of quality – look out for the tell-tale strips on the underside of your jeans, selvedge denim infers a brand’s focus on traditional craft, traceability and slower production processes.
